Saw some cool neighborhoods in San Francisco just by driving around by GPS. By far the steepest hill I’ve yet encountered was somewhere around Bella Vista, a street fittingly named for its beautiful view of the city.
Mission Street has a strong Hispanic population, and all manner of colorful storefront, murals, and bustling activity. In fact, everywhere we drove was bustling. On a Sunday.
Somewhere up the hills we conveniently ran into a Safeway store next to a Greek Orthodox church, where the employees are surprisingly so helpful as to take you to the pets section when you ask them. In other stores, you get a blank stare.
An act of kindness occurred at Pasta Pomodoro on 8th and Irving. I left my takeout order at the counter and had already walked two blocks, when through the afternoon din I hear, “My friend…” It was the courteous waiter who took my takeout order, running after me. Apologetic and self-effacing, he walked me back to the restaurant so I can retrieve the tasty garlic bread I had left.
